Māui is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Māori and Indigenous Studies at the University of Waikato. He has extensive experience in Māori Development and the use of Mātauranga Māori within the research and innovation sectors where he supports a range of initiatives to build Māori capacity in STEM.

Māui is a member of the Whakatōhea Māori Trust Board, a director on Eastern Seafarms Ltd, Whakatōhea Fisheries Asset Holding Company, the Pakihi Trading Company, and he is also very active in supporting the Opotiki Harbour development project.
