Kererua has a background in policy and the machinery of government with prior roles in Ministry of Business, Innovation, and Employment, The Treasury, Ministry of Justice and Te Puni Kokiri; Primarily working in Māori Economic development, Māori land and Treaty settlements.

Kererua has governance roles for a number of Kawerau based Ahu Whenua Trusts and and also advises on governance matters for related blocks. His biggest passion is geothermal and maximising the upstream and downstream opportunities to create inter-generational wealth and careers in the renewable energy sector.

Kererua is currently employed at Westpac as the Area Business Development Manager for Te Puku o Te Ika a Maui.
