Tanira has over 30 years’ experience in New Zealand’s agricultural, forestry and horticultural industries and has held many governance and research scientist roles. Tanira is currently the Research Leader in Primary Industry Systems with Scion Research with a focus on building frameworks that integrate climate change adaptation, land use change, environmental mitigations and socio-economic development. Tanira has extensive iwi and hapu networks around the country and has worked with many Māori economic authorities and post settlement entities on land-based economic development.
He sits on a number of Te Arawa entities and is the current chair of the Te Arawa Primary Sector group. He has been appointed to several government and Ministerial advisory groups on Māori land tenure, forestry and environmental policy reforms. Tanira has a PhD in agricultural economics and development from the Australian National University and an MAppSci (Hons) in agricultural systems and management from Massey University
