Primary industries with a focus on Technology

The primary industry is a rapidly growing sector across the wider Bay of Plenty. Showcasing vocational pathways in this space with a focus on technology, we were blessed to be able to take our rangatahi were in for a glimpse into the incredible world of Miraka Ltd.

Māori-owned Miraka is well established in the New Zealand dairy-processing industry with strong values founded on the cultural beliefs of our owners. These values guide their business decisions and underpin the interconnected relationships we all have with each other and with the natural world that sustains and nourishes our well-being.

Miraka introduced us to their dynamic team and we were able to hear about what Miraka do and how they weave Te Ao Māori throughout their business. Rangatahi then engaged in interactive and hands on activities to find out what the staff do in their roles. This was a key element to the event and enabled rangatahi to connect with Science and Technology with the staff within different industries.

A workshop facilitated by one of their Engineering Manager, George Tenwolde provided rangatahi with a hands-on exhibition where Rangatahi to dismantle and assemble machinery. They were also able to engage and interact with their young apprentices including Arekatera Turia and hear about what it has been like for him working at Miraka after leaving school.

Brendon Haigh – GM Innovation and Kate Arnold – Innovation Manager led a workshop consisting of mixing together coffee, milk and salt to show rangatahi what happens when different quantities are used with the milk powder. They talked about science and what kind of tests they do to ensure the milk powder is suitable for their customer's needs.

The afternoon was spent visiting Tuaropaki’s Ngaire George Sustainability Centre. Rangatahi heard from Mark Ross – Centre Manager who provided insights into how they use Steam to power the Miraka Factory and how they re-use waste by putting it through their onsite Worm Farm. There was lots of learning about the different sustainable ways they are focussing on to create power, grow kai, provide for their people and care for their whenua.
